National Junior Honor Society

Established in 1929, the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle-level students. Students in grades 6-8 who maintain a cumulative grade point average of 90% are eligible for membership. In addition to scholarship, the NJHS supports the Lexington One Graduate Profile that guides all students to learn, grow, and excel.

The NJHS supports its members by providing an environment that helps develop students who --

  • acquire and apply rigorous academic content in meaningful ways to thrive in life inside and outside of school;
  • create, test, and refining new ideas and solutions by using original, inventive thinking;
  • taking the initiative to develop a plan, monitor and reflect on progress and goals, and persevere through challenges to achieve goals;
  • listen, speak, and write effectively in different formats, for different purposes;
  • working productively with others to enhance outcomes while being willing to hear and offer different perspectives;
  • use media and technology, evaluate information, navigate the digital world, and make responsible financial decisions;
  • act with personal accountability and seek opportunities to improve;
  • are aware of others and show empathy, thoughtfulness, and encouragement to support one’s family, friends, school, and community; and
  • demonstrate perseverance, adaptability, embrace feedback when presented with difficult tasks and view challenges as learning opportunities.

Eligibility

Students in grades 6-8 are eligible for membership in the NJHS provided specific academic requirements are met.

  • Current 6th grade students must have a cumulative grade point average of 90% by the end of semester 1.
  •  7th and 8th grade students who earned a cumulative grade point average of 90% at the end of the previous year or at the end of semester 1 are eligible for membership.

Expectations

  • Members are expected to attend 80% of all chapter meetings. Attendance is defined as attending the entire meeting. If absent, members are responsible for knowing what took place during the meeting.
  • Members are expected to fulfill a minimum of 5 hours of school and community service per quarter. Three (3) of the community service hours must be school related. Members may get together to perform these services. All service hours must be tracked on the Service Hours form. Deadlines for submission of forms must be met by the end of each marking quarter. Examples of acceptable service include such things as volunteering to help at school events, peer tutoring, collecting for charities, assisting teachers and staff as needed, volunteering at a food pantry, volunteering at local charities, community events, religious organizations, etc.
  • Members must continue to be in good academic standing. Cumulative GPAs must not drop below 90%. If or when grades fall below the minimum requirement, students will be notified and moved to a probationary status until the end of the grading period.

Chapter Executive Board Officers

Students will elect from the membership the following officers: president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, and public relations liaison. The Executive Board will work directly with the faculty advisor in all matters related to chapter activities.
